Why This Matters

Imagine struggling with something really difficult, like an addiction, and instead of getting help, you're met with judgment and negative labels. That's what happens to many people dealing with substance use disorders (SUD). The way people talk about addiction—especially online—can make it even harder for them to ask for help.

The Problem: Stigma in Online Conversations

Many people with addiction face stigma, which means they are judged or labeled in a negative way. This can lead to:

  • Feeling ashamed and isolated
  • Avoiding treatment because they fear being judged
  • Being seen as "less than" by society

Social media platforms, like Reddit, are places where people talk about substance use. But sometimes, the anonymity of the internet makes people say hurtful things they wouldn't say in real life.

What We Did: Fixing the Problem with AI

Researchers analyzed over 1.2 million Reddit posts to find examples of harmful, stigmatizing language about substance use. They found:

  • Over 3,000 posts with stigma
  • Many posts judged people for their choices rather than understanding their struggles
  • The most common negative attitudes were about stimulants (like meth and cocaine) and cannabis (weed)

To help fix this, they used AI (artificial intelligence) to reword these posts in a way that's more understanding and supportive while still keeping the original meaning.
